Network Evaluation

OneRain has extensive experience evaluating gauge networks across the United States, including dense urban areas and remote locations throughout very diverse environments. While each system is unique and warrants its own personal approach, below are the core elements of our analysis.

On-site Gauge Network Survey and Maintenance Performance

OneRain will provide an on-site analysis of the current condition of your gauge network as well as any new sites you are considering. To accomplish this, senior members of our Field Support staff, escorted by someone from your staff, visit each site. We also review all prior maintenance activities and records you can provide, to highlight best maintenance practices and any deficiencies in the current maintenance regimen.

Transmission, Data Analysis, and Base Station Evaluation

We retrieve as complete a raw data record as possible from your current base station software and analyze the historical data to determine the effectiveness of your current system, including gauging technology, gauge siting, gauge density, data collection (including any erroneous or missing reports) and data storage.

We interview your staff to discover what they believe are problems and strengths of the system, including any IT constraints/requirements. We consider and potentially recommend architectural changes to enhance the system’s reliability, resiliency, and survivability during a major event.

We examine our records for creation of archive quality gauge-adjusted radar rainfall (AQ-GARR), and will use the AQ-GARR data to verify or disconfirm suspect data from individual rain gauges.

Personalized Delivery

The results of these efforts will be a system-wide analysis of current conditions, maintenance practices, and recommendations, presented as a detailed report noting our findings and suggesting action that will correct current problems, improve performance, and enhance reliability. We prefer to present a draft report in person with a formal final report following the draft presentation.

Pricing

Pricing varies based on the size of the network and level of detail desired. Price typically includes three days on site for the sites evaluation and staff interviews, additional data analysis, preparation and return trip for presentation of the draft written report, travel expenses, and delivery of the final report and recommendations.
