Creating Maps for DIADvisor in ArcView
Step by step instructions for creating maps in ArcView:
- Open a new ArcView project.
- Make sure your data is in decimal degrees, if not use the projection utility to "unproject" your data to decimal degrees.
- Add all your data layers (themes) to a View (Figure 1).

- Set your color and line properties for each theme.
- Zoom to the appropriate extent.
- Create a new polygon theme and add a rectangular polygon to this theme with the same extent as the view and shade it black (Figure 1). As you create this polygon note the coordinates of the bottom-left and top-right corners of the rectangle. These will be needed in StormWatch to define the background. Move his theme to the bottom of the theme list.
- Use the export function to export the current view to a bitmap image. Use the highest quality available.
- You could also use a graphics program such as Paintshop Pro to capture an area of the screen.
- Or press Alt-PrintScreen to capture the screen to the clipboard.
- Use a graphics program to crop the image to the black rectangle extent and reduce the number of colors to 256.
- Save the image.
